Ariana Grande Won 2 VMAs From Her Couch. 'Thank You' Was Enough.
Grande won Song of the Summer and Best Visual Effects for 'hate that i made you love me' while skipping the show. One Instagram post did all the work.
Go Where No Reader Has Gone Before ↓Ariana Grande posted a thank-you on Instagram on September 28. She had won two awards at the 2026 MTV VMAs the night before ... and she was not in the building when either one was announced. Per Geo TV, she wrote: "Thank you so so much for making 'hate that i made you love me' song of the summer, for best visual effects & thank you @mtv for recognizing us again!!!" She also praised director Christian Breslacher, calling the video "one of my favorite videos we've ever made."
Grande won Song of the Summer and Best Visual Effects, both for her single "hate that i made you love me" from her album petal. The VMAs ceremony took place September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Snoop Dogg. She had eight nominations across the night and collected two of them from home.
She announced a break from public appearances after her eternal sunshine tour concluded in September. Yahoo Entertainment reported her representative cited the need to step back from "public-facing work and appearances to escape endless, ongoing public scrutiny."
The absence is the brand strategy
The song drove the nominations. The social media algorithm kept the song in circulation for months. The VMA win was a confirmation of what was already happening, not a new campaign launch. Grande did not need to walk a red carpet for any of that to work.
Her beauty line r.e.m. beauty carries her name and her aesthetic. Her perfume catalog, running from Ari through Cloud and several successors, operates the same way. The brand is in the product and in the music. Physical event attendance was optional. She exercised that option.
Harry Styles also skipped. A pattern is forming.
Grande was not alone in skipping the show. Tyla reported that Harry Styles was also absent from the 2026 VMAs. Both artists have pulled back from major public events while keeping visibility through music releases and carefully timed social media posts. The pattern is not retirement. It is managed scarcity.
Managed scarcity is not a new concept. Beyonce built a sustained career on it. What is new is that the VMAs, which historically depended on in-person performances and red carpet moments, now generates award wins for artists who never interact with the venue. The artists do not need the show to benefit from it.
What this means for celebrity brand deals
For brands that price celebrity partnerships partly on awards-show visibility and press-circuit appearances, Grande's two-win night recalibrates the math. The equity lives in the song catalog, the social following, and the brand identity. None of it requires a seat in the audience.
The practical question for any brand writing a check tied to celebrity attendance: what are you actually buying? If the answer is cultural relevance, Grande demonstrated on Sunday that you can acquire and hold cultural relevance without a single publicist-approved photo in front of a step and repeat.
The 2026 VMAs were hosted by Snoop Dogg, with Taylor Swift winning Video of the Year and Madonna returning to the VMA stage for the first time in 23 years. The two-time winner of the night was home. She thanked the music video director. Her brand did not register the difference.
