The $401M sequel has its full cast now. Sweeney showed up at The Polo Bar with her co-stars before cameras roll ... and she is producing this one too.

Sydney Sweeney was photographed leaving The Polo Bar in Midtown Manhattan on October 3 alongside two of her "Housemaid 2" co-stars and producer Todd Lieberman ... and not a single camera has started rolling yet.

That is the point. The sequel, officially titled "The Housemaid's Secret," does not begin production until late 2026. The dinner was cast bonding. Sweeney attended not just as the lead but as a producer on the project, a credit that puts her on both sides of the table.

The cast is now mostly locked. Kirsten Dunst joins as Wendy Garrick, the wife of the wealthy household where Millie goes to work. Paul Anthony Kelly (known for "American Love Story") plays Douglas Garrick, Wendy's husband and Millie's new employer. Stephen Kalyn (known for "Off Campus") plays Brock, a lawyer who becomes Millie's boyfriend without knowing her full history. Brittany Snow joins as Marybeth. Michele Morrone returns as Enzo.

The plot pivots on a locked door. Per Variety, Millie takes the housekeeping job under one rule: she is forbidden from meeting the wife and cannot open a specific door in the house. What she finds is described as "secrets far darker than even the ones she herself keeps." Director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine both return.

Why the Dunst Casting Matters

Kirsten Dunst is not a franchise filler. Her recent run includes Fargo Season 2, Melancholia, and The Power of the Dog, the Jane Campion film that earned her Best Actress at Cannes 2021 and her first Oscar nomination. Sequels that cast at this level are signaling something about their own ambitions.

Putting Dunst opposite Sweeney in a Blumhouse-style domestic thriller is not a lateral move. It is a genre film with a prestige cast, which tends to punch above its weight in awards conversations and streaming longevity. Lionsgate has the picture dated for December 17, 2027, per Variety, a release window that aims at adult audiences.

The Numbers Behind the Sequel

The first "Housemaid" earned $401 million worldwide on a $35 million budget, per Hollywood Life. That ratio is what studios greenlight sequels for. Sweeney's producer credit means she participates in that upside now, not just in salary.

The first film succeeded partly because Sweeney held the press cycle together. She generated genuine tabloid heat alongside the theatrical release in a way that sustained the word-of-mouth run. The sequel cast she is assembling suggests she is running that same play, this time with better cards in her hand.

Our read: the Novig ad controversy generated enormous noise this fall, and it will eventually fade. "The Housemaid's Secret" is the long bet. Sweeney is one of the few working actors who can pull genuine press attention AND attract a cast like Dunst to a genre picture. The pre-production dinner at The Polo Bar is housekeeping on paper ... franchise infrastructure in practice.
