'The Housemaid' Hits HBO Max: Starz's Best Film Ever Goes Wider
Sydney Sweeney's $400 million erotic thriller leaves Starz this week and lands on HBO Max ... after spending six months as the platform's best-performing film of all time. Now comes the real test.
Engage ↓The Housemaid is now on HBO Max. The psychological thriller, starring Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway and Amanda Seyfried as the wife she works for, began streaming on the platform October 9, per Collider, with a short crossover window on Starz through October 11.
It is leaving behind a record. The Housemaid debuted on Starz on April 1 and never left the platform's Top 10 in the six months that followed. It is, per MovieWeb, the best-performing film in Starz history.
The theatrical numbers are what made that six-month run possible. Adapted from Freida McFadden's bestselling novel, the film earned $400.5 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. That is nearly double the gross of Anyone But You, Sweeney's previous high-water mark at $220 million, and it earned better reviews: 74% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes versus 53% for Anyone But You.
The audience did not disappear after the theatrical run or the Starz window. As of October 6, 2026, the film sat at No. 15 on Amazon's rental chart after 243 days, and No. 10 on Apple TV after 184 days, per Screen Rant's tracking. For a film released in late 2025, those are not casual numbers. That is a film with a repeating audience, not a single opening-weekend spike.
Our read: erotic thrillers were supposed to be dead. The genre peaked in the 1990s with Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction and spent the next 25 years being declared unsaleable to mainstream audiences. The Housemaid did not revive the genre so much as demonstrate that the audience for it had been waiting without a suitable vehicle.
HBO Max is the distribution test that Starz, with its smaller subscriber base, could not fully run. If the film charts on Max the way it charted on Starz, the data will be hard to dismiss when Lionsgate and Paul Feig are finalizing The Housemaid's Secret for December 2027.
Sweeney's brand arc this year has been described almost entirely in terms of controversy: the Novig ad backlash, the right-wing celebrity narrative, the MAGA Barbie framing. The Housemaid's numbers tell a different story: a genuine commercial track record, built film by film and platform by platform, with no single cycle necessary to sustain it.
The sequel, officially titled The Housemaid's Secret, reunites Sweeney with director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine and adds Kirsten Dunst as the wife Millie's new employer is hiding. Sweeney also holds a producer credit, which means she participates in the upside, not just the salary.
For now: it is on HBO Max. If you have not seen it, this weekend is the moment the whole streaming audience gets synchronized.
