Sweeney Keeps Dropping Syrn Bras. An Insider Calls It 'a Disaster.'
She posted a nude lace collection on Instagram Thursday ... but a source told In Touch Weekly the brand's team was already in crisis meetings over flagging sales.
Make It So ↓Sydney Sweeney posted a new video for her lingerie label Syrn on Thursday, modeling a plunging nude lace bra and telling followers she wanted the collection to be "super cute and playful," per the Daily Star. Fans filled the comments calling her a "goddess." The drop is the latest in a year-long content sprint from a brand that, per one industry source, is now under commercial pressure.
Syrn has launched at least five collections since January: the original Seductress line; "My First Rodeo" in the spring; a "Birthday Boobs" drop before her September 12 birthday; the Send Nudes collection we covered September 24; and now a nude lace bra this week. The pace suggests a brand working hard to stay in the news cycle.
'It's been a disaster'
In August, Reality Tea reported, citing In Touch Weekly, that a source close to the brand said the launch "has been a disaster." The brand's team was described as holding strategy meetings because "her saleability is waning rapidly," the source continued. The full quote, citing a brand insider: "They thought it would be a sellout based on Sydney's brand."
Syrn launched in January with VC backing from Coatue Management and a genuinely effective marketing stunt: bras were draped across the Hollywood Sign overnight, and the Seductress collection sold out within hours. At launch, Sweeney told Elle: "I wanted to build a lingerie brand that feels like it understands women instead of talking at them."
The Robin Report offered a structural critique of the brand: "SYRN's branding feels exclusionary. It does not invite women in; it asks them to emulate and fawn over the founder." The report concluded that "the consumer becomes secondary. The purchase feels less like self-expression and more like proxy participation in Sweeney's image."
The celebrity-founder second act
This is the most familiar problem in celebrity fashion. The launch media cycle and the brand-sustain cycle require different things. A viral stunt builds reach and press coverage. Repeat buyers require something else: a product experience compelling enough to make them come back for the second item, the third season, the next drop.
Five collections in nine months could mean Syrn is executing a planned product roadmap. It could also mean the brand is chasing the attention peak it got at launch. From the outside, the two strategies look identical. The August crisis report suggests the former framing is the more charitable read.
Sweeney said in a Cosmopolitan cover interview, as covered by Hello Magazine: "I want SYRN to stand for the power of choice." That is a vision statement. Turning it into a durable customer relationship, with or without a Novig controversy running in the background, is the test the brand has not yet passed.
The Novig backdrop
The nude bra drop arrives in the middle of a six-week Novig news cycle. The controversy gave Syrn a form of ambient marketing it did not plan: the phrase "Sydney Sweeney nude" has run in news headlines for weeks, and those audiences are also on Instagram. Whether that translates into repeat purchase is not clear.
Boxer Ebanie Bridges, defending Sweeney in response to the Novig backlash, argued this week that "everyone knew [the Novig ad] would sell, get attention and make money," per the Daily Star. The same question, whether attention converts to sales, is what Syrn is working out in real time.
Coatue-backed companies rarely run out of capital before they run out of time. The harder variable is whether the bras sell.
