Dunkin' Crashed the VMAs With a Script Nobody Asked For
The 2026 VMAs sold out every linear ad slot and logged nearly $18 million in spend. Its most memorable branded moment was a pumpkin spice sketch Dunkin' invented, pitched, and brought to the table before anyone asked.
Open Hailing Frequencies ↓The 2026 MTV VMAs sold out their entire linear ad inventory before the cameras rolled ... and the biggest moment in the broadcast's branded content strategy was a pumpkin spice sketch Dunkin' invented, pitched, and brought to the table before anyone at Paramount asked for it. Adweek reported that Matt Newcomb, SVP of marketing activation for Paramount Media Labs, put it plainly: "What screams more fall than Pumpkin Spice? That was not even a territory we were talking to Dunkin' about."
Dunkin' came in with a full creative brief. The brand pitched comedian Rachel Dratch as "Pumpkin Spice," positioned as a lost Spice Girl making her return, and the bit ran at multiple moments throughout the September 27 broadcast. The brand's fall campaign needed a tent-pole. The VMAs needed memorable branded content. No one at Paramount had to sell them on the idea because Dunkin' had already built it.
The show delivered the audience to justify the pitch. Per Adweek's post-show analysis, the 2026 VMAs drew 8.43 million total viewers, up 51% from the prior year's 5.5 million, making it the most-watched edition since 2015. The A25-54 demo hit 3.1 million, the highest since 2019. Social media logged 31.1 million interactions and 159 million video views.
The show pitched itself. Brands brought the scripts.
MediaPost's ad-spend breakdown puts CBS national advertising at $11.87 million and MTV at $5.99 million, totaling nearly $18 million in national TV spend. Paramount Media Labs assembled 116 bespoke branded assets and integrated eight minutes of branded content across the broadcast. Twenty advertisers were new to the VMAs. Four had never bought CBS in any context.
The other major sponsors: Bacardi (in its fourth year of VMAs partnership, with on-site activations and in-show integrations), Spotify, Under Armour, The General, and Credit Karma. Prescription drug advertisers Yeztugo and Bimzelx also ran national spots. That is a list that spans spirits, streaming, apparel, insurance, and pharma. The VMAs pulled categories that do not normally coexist in a single upfront buy.
Taylor Swift was the real ad buy
Every brand that wrote a check around this year's show was also betting on Taylor Swift's presence. She won Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia" and the inaugural Artist Director Honors. NBC News reported she now holds 32 Moon Person statues, surpassing Beyoncé's previous record of 30 and becoming the most-decorated artist in VMAs history. She also premiered "Patient Zero," a music video she directed herself, with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki.
That context is what converted the viewership spike from a fluke into a premium inventory story. A brand buying VMA airtime was not buying a declining linear awards show. They were buying the room where a historic record fell. Scarcity on that scale commands a premium. Linear sold out.
Paramount Media Labs has not broken out brand-specific spend figures beyond what Adweek reported. Dunkin' did not respond to a request for comment by publication time. Paramount Global's quarterly earnings call will offer more granular advertiser retention data when it reports in November.
Whether the model holds when the Taylor Swift factor is not on the table is the question every brand media buyer will be taking into their 2027 upfront negotiations.
