The 2026 VMAs Hit a 10-Year Ratings High. Viewers Still Want Them Canceled.

Madonna asked 'What is this for?' after winning Best Dance. Snoop Dogg's jokes died. The broadcast started 20 minutes late. And somehow 8.43 million people watched anyway.

The 2026 MTV VMAs drew 8.43 million viewers on September 27, making it the most-watched edition since 2015 ... and the most complained-about in years. Both facts landed simultaneously.

The broadcast on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+ opened 20 minutes late because an NFL game between the Cowboys and Ravens ran long. By the time the ceremony aired, Madonna's opening performance was already circulating on social media. Yahoo Entertainment reported that viewers had missed the first award presentation entirely before their televisions caught up.

Madonna won 7 awards and still lost the room

Madonna dominated the nominations with 13 nods, tying Lady Gaga's 2010 record, and walked away with seven trophies. She opened the night with her first live VMA performance in 23 years, bringing out Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX for a production built around bathroom-stall staging and laser dancers. Yahoo Entertainment's best and worst recap named it the strongest moment of the show.

Then came the speeches. After winning Best Dance, Madonna paused and asked the room: "What is this for, again?" Charli XCX had to reopen the winner's card to remind her. Comments about lip-syncing followed. The phrase "she looked out of breath" trended.

Later she told the crowd: "First of all I would like to thank my fingers, because I can always count on them." ABC News described her acceptance speeches as "bizarre." That is the word that will follow the evening.

Snoop Dogg hosted. The jokes did not land.

Snoop Dogg delivered scripted material that fell flat almost everywhere, though he landed one line that will outlive the broadcast. Watching Madonna accept another award, he told the crowd: "Madonna just killed it, now that is an icon ... she ain't no virgin no more." It was the cleanest delivery of the night and it came between categories.

Missing from the ceremony entirely: Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Olivia Rodrigo, and Zara Larsson. Song of the Year, one of the show's flagship honors, never appeared on air, even though BTS won it for "Swim." Per Yahoo, the broadcast simply moved on without it.

Swift made history. It still felt like a footnote.

Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia," accepted the inaugural Artist Director Honors, and became the most-awarded artist in VMA history with 31 total wins, surpassing Beyoncé. She dedicated the moment to the late Dolly Parton: "We were all very, very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton."

It was a genuinely historic speech at a genuinely historic moment. But the clip most people shared the next morning was Madonna asking what award she had won.

The real problem is not chaos. It is the wrong kind.

The VMAs built their identity on unpredictability: moments you could not script, could not replicate. A host forgetting the teleprompter. A surprise guest. An acceptance speech that becomes a cultural reference point. That is what the Madonna-Britney kiss was. That is what Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift was. The show traded on its own capacity to surprise, and for decades, that was a genuine brand asset.

What the 2026 show delivered instead was production chaos. A broadcast delay that spoiled the opening act before it aired. A headliner who forgot what she had just won. A host whose jokes cleared the room. These are not interesting surprises. They are embarrassments.

The 8.43 million viewers represent habit and legacy, not desire. Viewers tuned in because the VMAs are still the event they have always watched, and FOMO is a durable motivator. But the calls to pull the plug circulating on social media after Sunday's show are a leading indicator. When the chaos stops being electric and starts being exhausting, the audience that showed up out of habit will eventually find something else to do.
