Dave Grohl Burned the Foo Fighters Brand. Four Nights on Kimmel Is the Comeback.
Foo Fighters start a 4-night Jimmy Kimmel Live! residency Monday ... two years after Grohl's public confession about a daughter born outside his marriage stopped the machine cold.
Take Me There, Scotty ↓On September 10, 2024, Dave Grohl posted a statement on Instagram that stopped Foo Fighters cold. He announced a daughter born outside his marriage of 21 years to Jordyn Blum. "I love my wife and my children," he wrote, "and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness." Comments were restricted. The likes were hidden. The discussion went immediately to X, Reddit, and TikTok.
Two years later, Foo Fighters begin a four-night residency on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The band takes the stage Monday through Thursday, October 26 to 29. It is the most visible mainstream TV showcase Grohl has had since the confession, and it marks what looks, from the outside, like the final public step of a deliberate two-year brand rebuild.
A Playbook in Plain Sight
The comeback did not happen by accident or by silence. It unfolded in stages, each one paced to keep the machine moving without getting ahead of the story.
In the fall of 2025, Foo Fighters returned to small U.S. club stages with Ilan Rubin as their new drummer, replacing Josh Freese. The lineup change gave the comeback a "fresh chapter" frame: same band, new collaborator, moving forward.
On October 23, 2025, they released the single "Asking for a Friend" alongside the announcement of the 2026 Take Cover stadium tour, with Queens of the Stone Age as support. Grohl said: "the sun is finally rising over the horizon." He said the band is "forever devoted to doing this Foo Fighters thing."
On April 24, 2026, the twelfth studio album arrived: "Your Favorite Toy," on Roswell Records and RCA Records, recorded at home and co-produced by the band with Oliver Roman. Ten tracks. First album with Rubin on drums. Solid notices.
The Kimmel residency is the logical next step: four nights of live performance on late-night television, with Grohl sitting down for an interview on opening night. The residency echoes a five-night Letterman run Foo Fighters did for their "Sonic Highways" album in 2014. That one included guests. This one is the band playing to the largest general television audience they have had since the crisis.
What the Title Says Without Saying It
The single title "Asking for a Friend" landed in October 2025, 13 months after the announcement. A lot of people noticed the obvious read: a man who betrayed his family's trust asking, in song, for something he cannot quite state directly. Grohl has not confirmed or denied that read publicly. He let the title work.
The album title "Your Favorite Toy" is less legible, but the tracklist has its moments: "Unconditional," "Child Actor," "Amen Caveman." Whether these are coded autobiographical notes or standard Grohl maximalism is not something he has addressed in press. The album sold.
The Brand Arithmetic
Grohl's September 2024 confession was calculated in the same way the comeback has been: he posted it himself, on his own timetable, on a platform he controls, with comments off. He pre-empted the tabloid story and set the frame. "I am doing everything I can to regain their trust" is a very specific piece of public language. It does not deny anything, it does not attack anyone, and it invites exactly the sympathy response a brand manager would prescribe.
That does not mean the pain was performed. People can be genuinely remorseful and still phrase their public statements strategically. But it is worth saying plainly: the recovery of the Foo Fighters brand has been managed as carefully as any corporate product line that needed to distance itself from a moment of reputational harm.
The Kimmel residency is the graduation ceremony. It says: mainstream television wants this band back, and mainstream television's audience will watch them. Four nights is not a single booking. It is a statement of confidence.
