Jennifer Lawrence's New Haircare Brand Bets on Biotech Over Celebrity
Mes° launched today with a MIT biotech co-founder, proprietary fermentation-derived ingredients, and a co-founder who says it is not a celebrity brand. Two other celebrity beauty lines closed in the last six weeks.
Jennifer Lawrence launched mes° this morning: three haircare products priced between $34 and $52, sold exclusively at mesbeauty.com, built with Jasmina Aganovic, a chemical and biological engineer from MIT who founded biotech firm Arcaea. The co-founder's public position is that mes° is not a celebrity brand. "This is so much more," Aganovic told Glossy.
The week of the launch has not been kind to celebrity beauty as a category. Scarlett Johansson's skincare brand The Outset closed in September. Halsey's Af94 shut down in October. Both had launched with considerable press attention and failed to maintain the repurchase rates needed to sustain a DTC operation. Lawrence and Aganovic are entering a market where the exit velocity of celebrity brands has become as visible as the launch velocity.
biology gives us an entirely new way to think about beauty
The Science Is the Argument
Arcaea was incubated on the Ginkgo Bioworks platform, a synthetic biology company known for engineering organisms for industrial and commercial use. The mes° debut collection applies Arcaea's proprietary ingredient work to three haircare formats. The Multitask Repair Mask ($52) uses a Biomimetic Tri-Lipid Complex and Olive Squalane, claiming 6X less breakage and a 32 percent reduction in protein loss during washing. The Good Roots Volume Mist ($34) uses ARC-5™ Technology and Mediterranean Microalgae, claiming 2.5X more volume and 75 percent less scalp oiliness. The Off-Duty Restyling Serum ($44) uses AirSilk™ C15-19, claiming 86 percent less frizz and heat protection to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Those are brand claims, not independently verified results.
Lawrence's stated origin is the styling chair. She has said she spent years watching her hair processed for roles and events and started asking why better results required more effort. "I wanted to create something that could keep up with real life," she said in the brand's launch materials. "beauty should fit into your life, not the other way around." Aganovic's TED Talk on biotech's role in beauty was the catalyst for the partnership, which the two have described as a three-year collaboration.
The Market They Are Entering
Prestige haircare is growing. U.S. prestige haircare dollar sales rose 11 percent in the first half of 2026, with units up 8 percent, per market researcher Circana. Serum sales specifically rose 60 percent in the same period. Lawrence's Off-Duty Restyling Serum enters the fastest-growing sub-segment of the category she is targeting.
The benchmark for a successful celebrity haircare launch is Hailey Bieber's Rhode, which sold to e.l.f. Beauty for approximately $1 billion in 2025. Rhode had years of social media engagement, retail distribution, and consistent product drops before reaching that valuation. Brand analyst Pauline Brown told Glossy that a successful DTC launch like mes° could reach roughly $10 to $15 million in annual sales in its first year. That estimate assumes a functioning purchase funnel, which Lawrence has not yet built.
A Social Following With No Track Record
Lawrence joined Instagram in September 2026, weeks before the brand launch. Her account reached 8 million followers quickly, but its conversion track record for driving purchases does not exist. The famously social-media-averse actress is now one of the newest celebrities to test whether Instagram reach acquired just before a product launch translates into DTC revenue.
That question is central to the "not a celebrity brand" framing. Aganovic has described the differentiation as real: the ingredients were developed in a biology lab, not sourced from existing suppliers and rebranded. Whether that distinction registers with consumers browsing a $52 hair mask alongside dozens of other prestige options is the commercial test. The first 90 days of repurchase data will answer it more clearly than the launch press.
Lawrence and Aganovic have not disclosed funding, investment amounts, or plans for retail distribution. mes° is available now at mesbeauty.com. The brand has said it will expand beyond the debut three-product lineup, but no timeline has been given.
