Jonathan Bailey Is a Fading Cyclist in the Thriller That Comps to Whiplash
First look photos show Bailey in cycling kit for Pumping Black, a psychological thriller directed by Mimi Cave. Natalie Portman plays the doctor enabling his descent, driven by her own hunger for victory.
The first look at Jonathan Bailey on the Pumping Black set landed October 26, and it did what first looks are supposed to do. He is unrecognizable. The curls from Bridgerton are gone. The Wicked press tour tuxedos are gone. In their place: an undercut, skin-tight cycling kit, and the particular lean intensity of someone playing a man whose body is his last asset.
The photos are doing exactly the work that a good first look should do for a film that has not yet released a trailer. They reset expectations. Bailey has spent the better part of three years as the most in-demand romantic lead in Hollywood. Now he is a fading cyclist taking dark measures to protect a secret.
What the Film Is
Pumping Black is a psychological thriller written by Haley Hope Bartels and directed by Mimi Cave, whose feature debut Fresh (2022) turned a first date into something considerably worse. The comparison she is working with here is different. The film is described as being in the vein of Whiplash and Black Swan, two films that used disciplines with demanding physical cultures and clear hierarchies of mastery to build stories about obsession eating people alive.
Cycling is a good choice for this kind of story. The sport has a documented history of systematic doping, institutional pressure, and careers that can end in a single crash or a single positive test. The Tour de France in particular carries that weight. Using it as the backdrop for a story about a man protecting a dangerous secret is not a stretch.
The Inversion in Portman's Role
Natalie Portman plays Dr. Andrea Lathe, the doctor who takes Taylor Mace under her wing. The role is written with a specific note in the production materials: Lathe is driven by "her own thirst for victory and power." She is not the concerned professional. She is a co-conspirator in a different key.
Portman played the mentor in Black Swan, the demanding instructor who pushed Natalie's character toward a breakdown. Here she is on the other side of a similar dynamic, the person whose ambitions make a vulnerable athlete's situation worse rather than better. The parallel is too deliberate to be accidental.
Also joining the cast are Lukas Gage, who has been building a reputation for roles with difficult textures through The White Lotus and Smile 2, and Alex Akpobome, known from Industry. Neither character has been described publicly.
Bailey's Choices Since Wicked
Before Pumping Black, Bailey wrapped a Netflix film about the 2018 Johnson v. Monsanto trial, in which he plays Brent Wisner, the young lawyer who took on the agrochemical company over the herbicide Roundup. That film is also waiting for a release date.
He has also voiced Count Dracula in Audible's new adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, which launched October 1, 2026. Three projects, none of them romantic leads. The career move is visible.
The Production Details
Anton is fully financing Pumping Black, with production beginning Fall 2026, which means it is shooting now. Producers include Stacey Sher, Cave, Sébastien Raybaud, and Portman with Sophie Mas of MountainA. No release date has been announced.
The "jonathan bailey" search trend hit 100-plus in the United States today as the first look photographs circulated, a sign that his post-Wicked audience is tracking his next moves closely. The film does not have a date yet, but it already has attention.
