Jay-Z Ran the Halftime Booking for Seven Years. Now He's Playing It.

The rapper spent seven years choosing every Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime act as Roc Nation's NFL partner. On Monday night he announced he chose himself. The NFL commissioner says that was always the deal.

Jay-Z announced Monday night that he will headline the 2027 Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. He has been the man choosing the headliner since 2019. He chose himself.

The announcement aired as a short clip during the Dallas Cowboys versus Philadelphia Eagles Monday Night Football game on October 26. Apple Music posted it on X with the caption "GOAT's out of the bag."

Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.
Jay-Z, in a statement reported by TMZ

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement of his own: "When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request," per Complex. He did not elaborate, but the implication was clear. Booking Jay-Z himself was always part of the arrangement.

Roc Nation, the entertainment company Jay-Z co-founded, has served as executive producer of the halftime show since 2019 under a reported $5 million per year consulting deal, according to Puck's reporting via Hello Magazine. That arrangement was recently extended through 2029. Hamish Hamilton will direct the show. He directed Beyoncé's 2013 halftime performance at the same venue.

He Had the Keys. Critics Noticed.

The announcement has drawn criticism since the original reports surfaced in October. Rappers Cam'ron and Mase publicly mocked Jay-Z's reported difficulty finding a headliner, suggesting the public search was staged to frame his own reveal as the dramatic conclusion, per Complex. The confirmation that Goodell always wanted Jay-Z to perform gives that criticism more ground to stand on.

Apple's Vice President of Music and International Content, Oliver Schusser, praised Jay-Z's global impact in a statement and noted that Apple worked closely with Jay-Z over recent years to book other artists for the halftime stage. He said he was thrilled Jay-Z would now perform himself, per Complex.

The Numbers Behind the Performance

Jay-Z's JAY-Z30 Tour, marking 30 years since his debut album "Reasonable Doubt," recently ended with two nights at SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24, the same venue as Super Bowl LXI. Those SoFi shows brought out Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre as guests. Puck reported via the Daily Beast that three Yankee Stadium shows in July cleared over $42 million, and a single Paris date brought in $12 million.

Despite producing the show that featured Kendrick Lamar in 2025 and Bad Bunny in 2026, Jay-Z has never performed at the Super Bowl himself. That changes February 14, 2027, when he takes the same stage his company has been booking for seven years.

No guest performers for the 2027 show have been announced. Whether Beyoncé, who headlined in 2013 and guested in 2016, joins remains unconfirmed. The game airs on ESPN, ABC, Disney+, and NFL+.
