Kelly Clarkson Says a Brooklyn Shop Gave Her the 'Pretty Woman' Treatment. Then She Named It.

She drove to Atlantic Avenue ready to spend, got offered "something comparable," and told millions of followers exactly which store just lost a huge sale.

Kelly Clarkson drove to Brooklyn on Saturday to shop at Art of Play, the Atlantic Avenue curiosity shop, and left without buying a thing. By the afternoon she had named the store to her millions of X followers and called the employee who waited on her "an idiot," per Showbiz411.

The full post, from her verified X account: "Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn't afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me. Wow, dude. You're an idiot and just lost a huge sale. But y'all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in 'Pretty Woman.' For sure, check it out."

Art of Play sells what its website calls a unique collection of magical home goods, puzzles, games, toys and books, and runs a 26 seat theatre for close up magic, as Page Six reported. The shop declined to comment when Page Six phoned on Saturday, and Clarkson's fans had already started leaving negative Google reviews by the time the story ran.

The shop's only visible reaction so far is indirect. It posted an Instagram Story featuring a customer testimonial praising the store as a welcoming, respectful place, per Extra. No apology, no statement, no mention of Clarkson at all.

The Most Expensive Ad a Store Never Paid For

This is a site about advertising, so here is the advertising read. Celebrity word of mouth is the one placement no media buyer can purchase at list price. A genuine, unprompted post from the first American Idol winner saying she drove across a borough specifically to spend money at your shop is the kind of earned media a small retailer dreams about. Art of Play got exactly that post, with the polarity reversed, because one employee looked at a woman in the doorway and priced her in five seconds.

The irony is the engine of the story. Clarkson is a Grammy winner who hosts her own daytime show, and the scene she invoked is the most famous retail snub in movie history, the Rodeo Drive boutique that turns away Julia Roberts and gets the "big mistake, huge" walk back the next day. That script is a revenge of the customer fantasy everyone recognizes, which is why the post traveled from her feed to Page Six, TMZ and Extra within hours.

Does This Actually Hurt the Shop?

Our honest read: the tweet is survivable, the Google reviews are the real wound. A viral scolding fades in a news cycle, but review bombing sits on the shop's listing where every future customer looks, and the first page of search results for the store's name now tells the Pretty Woman story. That is the durable damage, and it was inflicted by proxy, by fans the store never served.

On the other side of the ledger, a niche magic and curiosity shop just became nationally famous overnight. Plenty of people reading the coverage are learning the store exists, and curiosity is literally the product. The silent treatment plus a testimonial Story is a bet that the cycle passes without feeding it. The riskier and possibly smarter play would be the self aware one, own the mistake publicly, invite her back, and let the apology travel as far as the complaint did.

What to watch: whether Art of Play puts out an actual statement, whether Clarkson takes the story to her show on Monday, and whether the review bombing gets cleaned up by Google or buried by supporters.
