Maya Hawke Gets First Offer on Hasbro's Magic: The Gathering Movie

Hasbro and Legendary cast Maya Hawke as the first celebrity in a Magic: The Gathering ensemble film. The game claims 50 million fans and has never reached the screen.

Maya Hawke is the first celebrity cast in the Magic: The Gathering movie from Legendary and Hasbro. Gizmodo reported on November 4 that she received the first offer and that her role is expected to be a key one. The film will be an ensemble piece, so Hawke is the first of several signings still to come.

Magic: The Gathering launched in 1993 and Hasbro claims more than 50 million fans worldwide. It has never produced a successful screen adaptation. That tension between audience size and screen track record is what makes the casting announcement worth watching.

Who Hasbro Chose First

Hawke is best known as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things and recently appeared in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. She is the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. The director attached to the project is Matt Johnson, who co-wrote the script. Johnson's prior credits include Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie and Tony.

Getting the first offer in an ensemble casting process means the production identified Hawke as the anchor the rest of the cast will be built around. It is a structuring decision. The studio is signaling what kind of film it intends to make before any other name is attached.

The 50-Million-Fan IP That Has Never Made It to Screen

Hasbro owns Magic through its Wizards of the Coast division. Wizards has licensed the game's imagery and characters in crossover products with Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, Masters of the Universe, Star Trek, Final Fantasy, and Marvel, per Gizmodo citing Deadline. Each crossover extends the brand into a new audience. A film and a tied TV component would be the first attempt to build something that generates its own audience rather than borrowing one.

The comparison point is Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which Hasbro released in 2023 through Paramount. That film grossed roughly 208 million dollars worldwide on a reported 150 million dollar budget. It earned decent reviews and modest box office but did not launch a franchise. If the Magic movie is following the same playbook, it starts from a comparable base of brand recognition.

Hasbro's Entertainment Bet

DataForSEO measured the query 'maya hawke magic gathering' at a search index score of 100 on November 5, 2026, the highest possible level on their scale. That is a signal that the casting news landed, that existing fans searched it immediately, and that the mainstream audience Hasbro wants to reach registered the name pairing.

What is not known: the character Hawke will play, the budget, the production start date, and the release window. The TV component that will tie into the same universe has not been described in detail. Neither Hasbro nor Legendary has publicly commented beyond what Deadline reported.

More cast announcements will follow. That is the structure of an ensemble announcement: one name establishes the register, then the rest of the names locate the film in the market. What those names are will tell you more about whether Hasbro is making another D and D or trying for something larger.
