Novig Tallies $317 Million on NFL Week 1: Volume 'Up 94%'
The ad dropped two days after the first kickoff. The controversy ran through the entire opening week. When Fortinsky told CNBC 'nothing to apologize for' ... he had the receipts.
Engage ↓The numbers are in, and Novig co-founder Jacob Fortinsky is not apologizing. Per The Lines, trading volume on the prediction market platform climbed 94% in the 20 days after the Sydney Sweeney ad dropped on September 9 ... compared to the 20 days before it.
The ad had help. It landed two days after the NFL's opening week, which means the platform was already seeing elevated sports-market interest when the controversy ignited. What happened next is the story.
Yahoo Finance, citing USA Today, reported Novig's notional trading volume hit $317 million in the week of September 10 to 16, the first full NFL Sunday week. That put the platform in the same conversation as DraftKings's DKeX exchange ($415 million) for that stretch ... a startup that launched in early August 2026.
What the data actually shows
The full 20-day comparison is striking. Briefs Finance tallied all the metrics: first-time depositors up 218%; app downloads up 187%; September active users up 96% month-over-month and 260% year-over-year. The 94% volume increase is the top-line summary of a platform that, by its own data, more than doubled its real-money engagement in three weeks.
Instagram following jumped 151%, from 37,000 followers to 93,000, per Yahoo Finance. Google search interest peaked on September 14 and briefly outpaced both Polymarket and Kalshi in U.S. searches. The ad accumulated over 60 million Instagram views and 2.6 million YouTube views.
Fortinsky, speaking to CNBC, summed it up: "We have nothing to apologize for and are very proud of the work that we did." He also noted that Sweeney herself sought the equity stake, drawn specifically to Novig's content restrictions: no political markets, no betting on deaths. "No betting on wars or deaths, and no politics" was the platform's explicit pitch.
The timing was the strategy
This is the detail most recaps miss. The Novig campaign was not just a celebrity ad buy. It was a calendar trade. Launching a sports-only prediction market with a controversial celebrity ad at the precise moment NFL season opens means your controversy cycle peaks during the highest sports-consumption week of the year.
The backlash from female athletes, which dominated sports media from September 10 through roughly September 20, functioned as 10 days of earned media. Every op-ed condemning the ad was another mention of Novig's name in a sports context. Sweeney did not fight back or apologize. The noise decayed on its own timeline. The trading volume did not.
Novig is also positioned differently from its competitors. Kalshi and Polymarket operate political and economic markets; Novig is sports-only with a 21-and-up age restriction, tighter than both rivals. That is a deliberate regulatory posture, and the Sweeney campaign broadcast it at NFL scale.
What the controversy cost Sweeney personally
The data on Sweeney's side is more mixed. She lost roughly 203,000 Instagram followers in the 48 hours after the backlash peaked, per Yahoo Finance. She recovered and gained back approximately 80,000 net followers by month's end, settling at 26 million. She holds equity in the platform, not a flat fee, so her upside is tied to whether the $317 million Week 1 run holds and grows.
Our read: the conventional story is that the Novig ad controversy "worked despite" the backlash. The data suggests it worked because the timing was deliberate. You do not launch a sports prediction market the week of your first NFL kickoff and generate 94% volume growth by accident. The controversy was the launch sequence.
