The Backlash

Sweeney Is an 'Israeli Honeypot,' They Say. The Claims Do Not Hold.

A viral theory built on six connections, a music sample, and a hostage photo spread across X after the Novig ad. We ran down every piece of it.

On October 3, a commentator named James Li posted on X that Sydney Sweeney is "100% a honeypot" for Israel, adding the word "Allegedly." The post followed Sweeney's Novig ad, which launched September 9 and had already drawn backlash from female athletes. Li laid out six connections. A 29-minute video extending those claims into a theory about a coordinated influence operation circulated shortly after.

The theory spread. International Business Times described the claims as "a collection of connections and interpretations," and found no credible evidence of espionage. We went through each piece of it.

The Hatikvah Sample

The Novig ad's soundtrack uses "Come Down" by Anderson .Paak, a 2016 track produced by Hi-Tek that samples a melody from Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem. FictionHorizon noted that Israel Hayom flagged the sample as appearing "without an apparent reason." What the theory omits: the same Anderson .Paak track appeared in a 2016 Nike ad. It was a popular production choice before Novig existed as a company.

The sample is a real fact. It does not establish intent. A music producer licensing a recognizable sample for two separate campaigns is ordinary industry practice.

The Scooter Braun Connection

Braun is Jewish and has been publicly involved in pro-Israel causes since October 7, 2023. He helped finance and organize a traveling exhibit honoring Nova festival victims, and in September 2024 he brought freed hostage Noa Argamani to the Global Citizen Festival to advocate for remaining hostages. Sweeney is in a relationship with him. Jewish Insider reported that she has "largely avoided political comment."

That a person shares in her partner's relationships and causes is not evidence of intelligence work. It is the ordinary outcome of being in a relationship.

The Hostage Photo

In January 2026, a photo of Sweeney with Noa Argamani and Avinatan Or, freed from Hamas captivity in June and October 2024 respectively, began circulating. StandWithUs posted it on X and Instagram. Jewish Insider reported that no one explained how the meeting was arranged. Braun has a documented relationship with Argamani through his hostage advocacy work.

A public figure meeting freed hostages is a news item, not a spy credential. The photo shows a meeting. The theory treats it as evidence of something the photo cannot show.

The Euphoria and Fortinsky Connections

Euphoria, the HBO show Sweeney stars in, is adapted from an Israeli drama. Novig's co-founder and CEO is Jacob Fortinsky. Both facts are accurate. FictionHorizon noted that one Substack analysis argued "the same kind of connections could be used to build equally unproven theories about Jeff Bezos or crypto." Adapting an Israeli show is standard IP licensing. A founder's national background is not intelligence affiliation.

What the Theory Actually Demonstrates

Connection-mining is a technique: you gather real, verifiable facts about a person and arrange them into a narrative. Each individual fact checks out. The narrative does not follow. The theory about Sweeney contains no fabrications. It also contains no evidence that any intelligence operation occurred, that Sweeney knows about such an operation, or that the Novig ad was designed to serve one.

International Business Times concluded there is "no credible evidence that Sweeney works for Israel, Mossad, or any intelligence service." No credible investigation has established otherwise. Sweeney has not addressed the theory. Novig has not addressed it. What the theory has accomplished is another week of conversation about a campaign that was already being discussed everywhere.

This is what the attention economy looks like at its most efficient. The original controversy generated reach. The debunking generates more reach. The ad gets a longer tail than it would have had otherwise.
