Ben Wang Is in Talks to Play Iceman in Marvel X-Men Before His Hunger Games Film Opens

The American Born Chinese star is reportedly in negotiations to play Bobby Drake in the May 2028 reboot. The casting is not yet confirmed, but the Google Trends spike for his name hit peak 100 today.

Ben Wang is reportedly in talks to play Bobby Drake, the mutant known as Iceman, in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot set for release on May 5, 2028, according to reporting by Deadline and confirmed by Gizmodo and ComicBookMovie on November 2, 2026. The casting is not yet final.

Wang, 22, broke out as the lead of Disney Plus's American Born Chinese in 2023 and earned the CinemaCon Star of Tomorrow award in April 2025. He is also starring in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and the upcoming sixth season of Apple TV's For All Mankind. The Hunger Games film opens before X-Men, meaning Wang's marquee value will be clearer to Marvel by the time production begins.

The Ensemble Marvel Is Building

The X-Men reboot's confirmed cast reads like a roll call of streaming generation breakouts: Kit Connor, who played Nick Nelson in Netflix's Heartstopper, is Scott Summers. Sadie Sink, known for Stranger Things, is Jean Grey. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue. Asa Germann plays Angel. Maya Boyd plays Storm. Christopher Abbott plays Professor Charles Xavier. Samara Weaving plays Emma Frost. Adam Driver plays Nathaniel Milbury.

Director Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts for Marvel, and writers Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear) are building this ensemble. The pattern across the cast is consistent: actors who are already known to young audiences through prestige streaming work, but who have not yet headlined a global theatrical release. Wang fits that description precisely.

What the Iceman Role Means

Bobby Drake is one of the five original X-Men from the 1963 comics. Shawn Ashmore played the role in every Fox X-Men film from 2000 through X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. In the comics, Drake came out as gay in a 2015 storyline, making Iceman one of the most notable LGBTQ characters in superhero publishing. The reboot does not appear to have indicated how it will handle that arc, but it is part of the character's established history.

Wang, for his part, has not spoken publicly about the reported negotiations. ComicBookMovie, citing The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit, reported that Gabriel LaBelle, Jackson Kelly, and Rhenzy Feliz were also in the running for the role. Feliz is best known for playing Victor Aguilar in DC's The Penguin, which aired on HBO in late 2024.

The Casting Pipeline

What the X-Men casting suggests is a deliberate bet on the next generation of global theatrical stars before they cross over. Marvel used the same approach with the Avengers franchise, picking actors at the inflection point between critical recognition and mainstream reach. The franchise then becomes the crossover vehicle. The X-Men cast, if it holds, does the same thing for a post-streaming moment when theatrical breakouts are harder and streaming credits are abundant.

Wang's trajectory is unusually compressed: three years from American Born Chinese to Hunger Games to potential X-Men. The overlap between his Hunger Games and X-Men scheduling is notable because it means his opening-weekend performance in the Katniss universe will be fresh data when X-Men marketing ramps up. If Sunrise on the Reaping opens well, Wang's Iceman is a story. If it opens weakly, Marvel still has months before filming to reconsider.

Filming on X-Men is expected to begin in the coming months, with release set for May 5, 2028. No deal terms for Wang have been reported.
