Martha Stewart Dressed as a Homeless Person to Sell Candles

The Halloween costume was slide three of an Instagram carousel promoting her QVC candles. After the backlash, she issued two statements. The second one said she had really screwed up.

On October 31, 2026, Martha Stewart posted an Instagram carousel to promote her QVC candle collection. The first two slides were candles. The third showed Stewart in tattered clothing, dirt-style makeup on her face, holding a sign reading "I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!" The caption across all slides: "My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!"

The post was deleted within hours. Screenshots stayed online. Critics called it "out of touch," "dystopian," and "callous." The photo was still visible on her Facebook page the following morning, per NBC News and Yahoo.

I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.

That first statement did not close the story. The backlash continued through Saturday. By Sunday, Stewart posted a second statement on Instagram, per AOL. It said: "It's hard to admit when you've really screwed up. My earlier statement didn't go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am sorry."

The reaction to the apology was divided. Some commenters said it still was not enough. Others told her not to apologize at all.

The Brand Problem

Stewart is estimated to be worth around $400 million, according to the Daily Beast, which noted the figure in its coverage of the backlash. That detail matters here because Stewart's commercial value rests entirely on aspirational domestic authority. She does not sell candles. She sells the idea that you can live and entertain the way she does, with taste, precision, and polish.

The homeless costume did not just offend sensibilities. It collapsed the premise of the product pitch happening in the same carousel swipe. A brand that charges for elegance cannot dress as poverty and then ask you to buy its candles before you scroll past. The adjacency is not recoverable with a charity line in a press statement.

This is not the first time Stewart's public persona has slipped against the reality of who her audience is. In 2023, she used pieces of a Greenland iceberg as a cocktail garnish, drawing criticism over climate change. In 2016, she blamed millennials' economic struggles on work ethic in an interview with a luxury real estate publication. Both episodes involved the same structural gap: the assumptions baked into her lifestyle brand meeting an audience that lives the opposite of those assumptions.

The QVC Question

No statement from QVC appeared in any major outlet's coverage of the story. The candle line remains listed on the platform. The partnership was not formally addressed.

That silence is itself a brand decision. QVC is not required to respond to a talent's personal social content. But the absence of any comment leaves the association intact: the costume and the candle pitch ran together. That is the version of the story that was screenshotted and shared.

The arc here runs from Halloween 2026 forward. Stewart's brand recovery from past controversies has been durable. She came back from a federal prison sentence in 2004 and built a second commercial life. This episode is smaller in consequence, but it adds to a pattern of moments where her self-image and her public image have failed to line up.
