Chili's Margarita Degreaser Burned Five People in North Carolina

A power-washing contractor's cleaning chemical was mistaken for sugar and used to rim drinks at a Chili's bar. Five customers and staff ended up at urgent care.

Three customers and two employees at a Chili's Grill & Bar in Forest City, North Carolina sustained chemical burns in and around their mouths after a granulated degreasing chemical was mistaken for sugar and used to rim margarita glasses. All five went to urgent care, according to local health officials and reporting by WRAL News.

The Foothills Health District said a contracted worker had been using an unlabeled container of the degreaser while power-washing the exterior of the building. The container was left behind and brought into the bar area. An employee at the margarita station used it to prep drink rims without knowing what was in it.

How the Health District Responded

Megan Rollins of the Foothills Health District described the bar setup to the New York Times as a small tray where staff put water and lime juice, with a separate area for salt or sugar. The degreaser replaced the sugar on that tray. The district temporarily suspended the restaurant's food service permit after the incident. Environmental health specialists completed their investigation on October 29 and reinstated the permit after the restaurant took corrective measures, including cleaning and sanitizing affected equipment and preparation areas.

The WRAL article, posted October 30, 2026, described the incident as occurring 'on Wednesday,' which the reporting context places at approximately October 28. No information on the severity of injuries beyond 'chemical burns in and around the mouth' was available in the reports reviewed for this article.

What the Brand Crisis Reveals

Chain restaurants sell two things that fast-food and casual dining competitors alike repeat in every campaign: consistency and safety. The Chili's system failure here is not a kitchen accident or a supply-chain contamination. It is a procedural gap: an unlabeled container from an outside contractor's power-washing kit traveled from the building exterior to the drink prep area without anyone catching it.

That is the exact category of error that standardized operating procedures and staff training are designed to prevent. Any container of unknown origin in a food or drink prep area should trigger an immediate stop. The unlabeled-container detail is the part of this story that food safety professionals will key on: the degreaser would not have been used if the container had been labeled, or if an SOP had required discarding any unknown container before bringing it near food.

By November 1, 2026, the day after WRAL published its initial report, the story had reached the New York Times and USA Today. Newser noted that no Chili's corporate statement was available in that reporting. By November 2, Google Trends showed 'chilis' at peak 100 in the United States. The silence on day two of a national news cycle is itself a brand story: the operational answer (permit reinstated, corrective measures complete) is available, but no voice has attached to it.

For a brand whose current turnaround story has centered on quality and value, a food safety incident with five injuries and a national media cycle is a test of whether the cultural goodwill built from the Big Smasher and the 3 for Me deal holds when the news is bad. The answer from the company, when it comes, will matter as much as the operational fix.
