Brunello Cucinelli has spent decades building a brand on the idea of dignity. He calls his business model 'humanist capitalism.' He donates a portion of profits to restore the medieval village where his factory stands. He gives speeches about the soul of work. On Chinese social media last week, footage from a brand event showed the founder appearing to brush actress Liu Tao's chest while she turned sideways and drew back.
The footage circulated in late October. Dim Sum Daily reported on October 28, 2026 that Cucinelli "repeatedly reached out to touch her, ran a hand from her shoulder down to her waist, and, as they shifted their footing, appeared to brush the side of her chest." Liu Tao, known for the drama series Nirvana in Fire and Legend of Mi Yue, kept a professional composure during the encounter. In the group photo, per the report, he tugged her firmly toward him; she forced a working smile to get through the frame.
Once she turned away the smile dropped and her face looked tense and uneasy.
A Brand Built Around the Word Dignity
The tension is structural. Brunello Cucinelli's core marketing proposition is that his company treats people with dignity: workers, craftspeople, the land around Solomeo, the village in Umbria where his cashmere goods are made. He has positioned himself not as a typical fashion executive but as a philosopher of ethical enterprise. The brand is a public company: Brunello Cucinelli S.p.A. has been listed on the Milan Stock Exchange since 2012.
China is the brand's fastest-growing market. A 2024 Jing Daily report described the company's deliberate strategy: China represents 13% of sales, with a target to add two percentage points annually. Cucinelli has resisted rapid expansion to protect exclusivity and avoid the commodity trap that damaged other luxury houses in the market. He has also personally cultivated the relationship, taking his docufilm 'Brunello: The Gracious Visionary' to Shanghai for screenings.
What Chinese Social Media Said
After the Liu Tao clip circulated, users on Chinese platforms reportedly searched older event photos and raised allegations about similar behavior with other actresses. Dim Sum Daily named Chen Duling, Kim Yoo-jung, Eileen Gu, and Li Xiaoran. Those are unverified social media allegations, not confirmed accounts, and none of the named individuals had spoken publicly about the matter as of this writing.
Neither Brunello Cucinelli the person nor the company had issued a public statement by November 1, 2026. Liu Tao has also not commented publicly. The descriptions of the contact in the Dim Sum Daily piece are the reporter's characterizations of video footage, not a formal complaint or legal allegation.
The Question the Brand Now Faces
A luxury brand's China strategy runs on relationship capital: celebrity appearances that generate aspirational imagery, word-of-mouth among discerning consumers, an association between the brand and cultural credibility. Brunello Cucinelli has pursued exactly that model, with store openings in Shanghai and Wuhan planned for 2026. A backlash tied to an actress's visible discomfort on camera is precisely the kind of reputational damage that a slow-growth, exclusivity-first strategy cannot easily absorb.
Google Trends showed 'brunello cucinelli' at 65 out of 100 in the United States on November 1, 2026, reflecting sustained post-fashion-season interest. The 'liu tao brunello' query variant returned no measurable US traffic in our data pull, which means the story is moving primarily through Chinese platforms rather than international press. Whether it crosses over depends on whether the brand responds.
