Kevin Pollak just revealed that Tom Cruise physically punched Jack Nicholson on the set of "A Few Good Men" in 1992 ... because Nicholson made a clown face during the famous courtroom take, and Cruise was not having it.

Pollak told the story on the "Still Here Hollywood" podcast with Steve Kmetko, published October 25, 2026. He had been keeping it for 34 years.

During the shoot of the iconic courtroom confrontation, the camera was on Nicholson. Which meant Cruise, standing off-camera, could see exactly what Nicholson was doing with his face. What he was doing was making exaggerated clown expressions.

Cruise stayed in character and finished the take. Then, per Pollak's exact words: "Tom stayed in the pocket and finished the scene and then punched Jack Nicholson in the shoulder."

Both men laughed. The punch was not hostile. It was the kind of thing that happens when two supremely competitive performers have been locked in a room together for weeks and one of them decides to test the other's focus from behind the camera.

A Set Where Fun Was the Point

Director Rob Reiner ran the "A Few Good Men" set with a philosophy Pollak recalled clearly: if they weren't having fun, there was no point in any of it. That culture made Nicholson's face-pulling less of a provocation and more of a compliment. He would not have done it to someone who couldn't take it.

The film earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Nicholson. The courtroom scene Pollak is describing, built around the "you can't handle the truth" moment, is one of the most replayed exchanges in 1990s cinema. The clown face never made it to the screen.

Pollak Told It as a Tribute

Pollak's podcast appearance was partly a posthumous tribute to Reiner, who died in December 2025. Per coverage by Fox News Digital, republished October 23, the stories about the set came out in that context, not as tabloid dish.

That framing matters. This is not Pollak trying to embarrass Cruise or diminish Nicholson. It is a performer describing what it was like to be in the room when two of the best actors of that generation were working at the top of their game and testing each other for sport. The punch was the compliment.

The read here: 34 years of silence on a story this good is its own kind of professionalism. Pollak was on that set, he watched it happen, and he held it until Reiner was gone. The story belongs to the era now. He let it out at the right moment.
