The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Just Won Two Television Emmys
The 53rd Daytime Emmys went to Sherri Shepherd, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and Beyond the Gates. And to the Macy's parade. That last one is worth thinking about.
At a glance
- Brand wins hardware
- The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade won Outstanding Music Direction and Technical Direction at the 53rd Daytime Emmys. The parade is a brand-owned production; it was nominated in six categories and won two.
- History made
- Beyond the Gates, described as the first Black-led daytime drama in over 30 years, won Lead Actress (Tamara Tunie) and Emerging Talent (Ambyr Michelle) from 15 total nominations.
- The search spike
- Google Trends shows 'daytime emmys 2026' peaked at 100 in the US on October 31, the day after the ceremony streamed on YouTube at the Hollywood Palladium.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade won two Emmy Awards on Friday night. Not for being a notable cultural event, which it also might be. For music direction and for technical direction.
The parade won Outstanding Music Direction and Composition and Outstanding Technical Direction and Video at the 53rd annual Daytime Emmys, per That Grape Juice, which published the full winners list. The ceremony was held at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles and streamed on YouTube.
Beyond the Gates Made History at the Same Ceremony
The same night, Beyond the Gates took acting honors. The CBS show earned 15 nominations, and Tamara Tunie won Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series. Ambyr Michelle won Outstanding Emerging Talent. That Grape Juice described it as 'the first Black-led show of its ilk in over 30 years.'
The broader winners list had other notable names. Sherri Shepherd won Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host for Sherri. The Kelly Clarkson Show took Outstanding Daytime Talk Series. General Hospital won Outstanding Daytime Drama Series for what has become a well-established pattern over the show's decades-long run. Tracee Ellis Ross won Outstanding Travel and Adventure Program for Solo Traveling With Tracee Ellis Ross. Genie Francis, who played Laura Spencer on General Hospital for more than four decades, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
A Brand Event Won Production Awards
The parade is worth pausing on. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is 97 years old and it is, at its core, a brand event. Macy's designs and produces it. Macy's name is in the title. Its purpose is to open the holiday shopping season with its anchor sponsor front and center for three hours on NBC. That broadcast won two Emmys for production craft.
The TV academy voted for the technical work on its own merits, independently of what the parade is for commercially. But the result is that a brand-owned production now holds the same kind of hardware as scripted dramas and independent talk shows. The parade nominated itself in six categories in total and won two. It was also nominated for Outstanding Daytime Special, Live Sound Mixing, Lighting Direction, and Costume Design.
CBS has not announced renewal plans for Beyond the Gates. The 2026-2027 daytime season will show whether the first Black-led daytime drama in decades can build an audience consistent enough to sustain a second season. Google Trends data shows 'daytime emmys 2026' peaked at 100 in the United States on October 31, the day after the ceremony. 'Beyond the gates' reached 40 the same day.
