Goodman Hit 400 Lbs After Going Sober: 'I Was Eating Alcoholically'

He stopped drinking in 2007, traded the bottle for the fridge, and cycled 60 to 80 pounds up and down for years ... until surgery, and a new problem: he is anemic and cold all the time.

John Goodman quit drinking in 2007. He told The New Yorker in an interview published October 18 that sobriety did not solve the problem ... it rerouted it. "I was almost 400 pounds," he said. "I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking."

The pattern lasted years. He described the cycle to The New Yorker, covered by E! Online and Yahoo Entertainment on Tuesday: "I'd lose 60 pounds in a summer, gain it all back. 70 pounds, 80 pounds." He said it "got tiring," and he eventually decided to stop it.

He stopped it with a stomach operation. Goodman revealed the roughly 200-pound loss publicly in 2023, a figure representing about half his peak body weight. He is 6-foot-2 and at his heaviest was "pushing 400," a number he first acknowledged to David Letterman in 2010 during the Roseanne years.

The Operation Came With a Bill

"I also turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under my skin, and I'm cold all the time," Goodman told The New Yorker. It is not a punchline. It is the part of weight loss surgery that does not go on the transformation poster.

On the drinking itself, he did not soften anything. Alcohol "sustained" his immaturity, he said, and when he quit he had "a lot of catching up to do, just realizing how selfish it made me." He described bigger hangovers driving him back to drinking to stop the shakes, a cycle that kept cycling until it stopped. When it stopped, he had to be hospitalized "one way or the other."

A Hip Fracture Complicated the Recovery

In March 2025, while filming Digger with Tom Cruise, Goodman slipped on set in stocking feet and fractured his hip. He is now working through low-impact exercise: core strength, balance, and strength training aimed at reducing fall risk. He is 73.

What the Honesty Is Worth

Trading addiction is not a new concept in recovery circles. Celebrities rarely narrate it this plainly. Goodman's framing of food as something he consumed "alcoholically" is not a metaphor he softened. He said it to The New Yorker and let it stand.

The standard celebrity weight loss story runs: rock bottom, the right program, the transformation. Goodman's version runs: sobriety, food addiction, years of cycling, surgery, 200 pounds gone, still anemic, still cold. That is a more complete account and a rarer one.

He told The New Yorker he learned "it was great to see there was a life where I didn't have to use anything to enjoy it." He has been working on believing it since 2007.
