Miley to Dolly: 'If You're Here Right Now, Flicker the Lights'
The hallway started flickering ... Maxx Morando was there and had no idea what she'd asked.
Open Hailing Frequencies ↓Dolly Parton died on August 25, and Miley Cyrus, who had called her "Aunt Dolly" since 1992, had been carrying that loss quietly ... until the Sunday night show at the Hollywood Bowl, where she told thirty thousand people what happened when she asked for a sign.
At home one evening, Miley set a flower and a lit candle in front of a life-sized Dolly mannequin, a Christmas gift from Parton. She held her phone up to it and played a video of Dolly performing "Jolene." Then she went still and asked.
Dolly, if you're here right now, flicker the lights.
The hallway started flickering. Her fiancé and drummer Maxx Morando was there. Per Entertainment Now, he saw the lights go and had no idea what she had asked.
Two Nights the Bowl Couldn't Hold
The October 16 and 18 shows were Miley's first major Los Angeles homecoming since Dolly's death, and both ran at that pitch. On Friday she broke down in tears recalling a Dolly concert she once attended as a regular fan: Dolly had invited her onstage, and Miley stayed in the crowd.
On Sunday she held a framed photo of Dolly during a "Used to Be Young" sing-along and closed the evening with Morando onstage for their encore.
Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could tear us apart ... and I'm gonna see her again.
Just before "Jolene," she turned to the crowd one more time: "Let my Aunt Dolly hear you."
The Album Is No. 1, the Grief Is Not Done
The comeback doubled as the California victory lap for Bass Persuades, Miley's tenth studio album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 after its September 18 release. Success and grief arrived in the same week, and Miley has not been separating them.
A representative for Miley Cyrus did not comment beyond what was said from the stage. The Dolly Parton estate has not issued a statement.
The mannequin is still in the bedroom. The hallway has no official explanation.
