Hilary Swank, 52, Announces Third Baby. The Age-Shaming Crowd Showed Up. So Did Her Answer.

Two Oscars. Twins at 49. Baby number three due in December, announced with a glow-stick Instagram video. When the "too old" critics arrived, Swank had five words for a fan that said more than a statement ever would.

Hilary Swank is pregnant at 52 ... and the internet had opinions about that, right on schedule.

The two-time Oscar winner announced Wednesday, October 15, that she is expecting her third child with husband Philip Schneider, 53. The announcement arrived not as a press release but as an Instagram video: Swank, Schneider, and their three-year-old twins Aya and Ohm dancing around in glow-stick costumes, a glow stick placed on her belly to mark the news. Per LBC, her caption played it as a career update: "A lot of people have been asking what project I'm doing next, this one releases in December."

December. Third child. Twins at 49. At 52, Swank is not slowing down on any front.

How the critics respond when the subject is a woman

The congratulations came. So did the commentary about her age. They always do, and the pattern is worth naming: when a woman in her fifties announces a pregnancy, the internet reaches for "irresponsible" and "too old." When a man in his fifties, sixties, or seventies does the same thing, the coverage is either absent or framed as vitality.

This is not a new observation. In 2022, when Swank announced her first pregnancy (the twins) at 48, a commenter told her she would be "in your 70s when they graduate college." Her co-star from the series Shameless, Emmy Rossum, responded to that troll with three letters. The letters were "Gfy." The abbreviation is not polite. The sentiment, at the time, felt proportionate.

The 2026 announcement drew the same energy. FandomWire documented the recurring pattern of critics tagging Swank's pregnancies as late or reckless, the same criticism that has not applied in remotely comparable ways to Mick Jagger (fatherhood at 73), Jeff Goldblum (62 and 66), or Robert De Niro (68 and 79). The double standard is not subtle.

"Things happen in their time, not ours"

Swank did not engage with the critics directly. What she did do, per The Wrap, was reply to a fan who wrote that they were 39, single, and childless, and that Swank's news gave them hope. Her reply: "Things happen in their time, not ours. That has always been the case for me, and trusting that has always been the hardest part."

That is not a press statement. It is not a clapback. It is a specific, personal answer to someone who needed to hear it, which made it land harder than any formal response to critics would have.

For context: Swank told People earlier this year that she was glad her career was established before she became a parent. "If I had had a kid in my 20s or my 30s," per the AP, "I think I'd be a different parent than I am now." She also said she was not planning what it would look like, that it "just worked out."

The third time around

Swank won her first Academy Award for Boys Don't Cry in 1999 and her second for Million Dollar Baby in 2004. She married Philip Schneider in 2018. Their twins arrived in 2023. A third child is due this December.

The people who think that timeline is somebody else's business are, apparently, going to keep having that argument with themselves. The rest of us are watching a woman who operates exactly as she wants to, at whatever pace makes sense to her. There is something clarifying about that, even if it makes certain corners of the internet very uncomfortable.
