Florence Pugh Returns to Sheer: 'Why Are You So Scared of Breasts?'

She was not in the cast or on the call sheet. Florence Pugh walked into the BFI premiere of "Klara and the Sun" in a Rodarte gown with wing-shaped sleeves and made herself the story anyway.

Florence Pugh was not in Klara and the Sun. She was not on the call sheet, not in the credits, and had no promotional obligation to be there. She showed up anyway to the 70th BFI London Film Festival premiere in a Rodarte Spring 2026 sheer gown layered in floral embroidery and sculptural wing-shaped sleeves, and by the end of the evening the gown was the only thing the room was talking about.

Jenna Ortega, who actually stars in the film as Klara, a solar-powered humanoid robot companion built to ease loneliness, wore custom Torlowei. She was the one promoting the film. She told Variety: "I hope the film makes people put down the computers and phones." She wore gold satin. Pugh wore sheer. The cameras found Pugh first.

The Dress That Keeps Starting Conversations

The Rodarte gown had a pale mint-green sheer base with coral pink, muted blue, and silver floral beading sewn across the bodice, and pointed wing-shaped sleeves that made every shoulder in the room look plain by comparison. Styling was by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, who has worked with Pugh consistently since the Valentino era.

The Valentino era is the relevant reference. In 2022, Pugh wore a nearly transparent pink Valentino couture gown at the Valentino show in Rome. The backlash came immediately: commentary about her body, about the gown, about what she should have worn instead. Her Instagram response was brief: "Why are you so scared of breasts?" The sentence became the story.

From 2022 Rome to 2026 London

She has worn sheer deliberately since. The Rodarte at BFI is a different register from the Valentino: floral rather than solid, structured rather than flowing, at a film festival rather than a fashion show. But the through-line is the same. Pugh has made sheer into a signature rather than a one-off moment. Each appearance confirms that the 2022 response was not an apology tour pivot: it was a direction statement.

Taika Waititi directed Klara and the Sun, adapting Kazuo Ishiguro's 2021 Nobel Prize-winning novel. Amy Adams and Natasha Lyonne co-star. Waititi's wife Rita Ora also attended the premiere. Pugh was a surprise guest, not a cast member.

The context Ortega gave the film is worth holding here. Klara is a robot designed to prevent loneliness in a world where people have retreated into screens. Pugh walked in wearing a gown that was architecturally impossible to ignore, in a room full of phones. The juxtaposition was probably not intentional. It registered.
