Jenny McCarthy Says Tom Cruise Tried to "Lure" Her Into Scientology

Jenny McCarthy says Tom Cruise spent years trying to recruit her and then-boyfriend Jim Carrey into Scientology, and that the approach included direct calls from Cruise inviting them to his Aspen home. On her podcast The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show, recorded October 15, 2026 with guest Anne Gollert Hill, a former Scientologist, per Yahoo Entertainment, McCarthy said Carrey had already seen it coming: "They're just going to want to try to lure us in." They declined every invitation.

McCarthy described Cruise as "very nice" but "very programmed." She said Scientology chairman David Miscavige "could have broke me, easily" and that a joke she made to him at the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes wedding made her immediately regret speaking to him at all.

McCarthy and Carrey attended the Cruise/Holmes rehearsal dinner in November 2006. She asked to hold baby Suri. Per Complex, the entire room went silent and fixed its gaze on her. McCarthy called it the "Scientology stare" and said she felt like she was "in the belly of the beast." Her summary: "It felt like Rosemary's Baby in there."

Miscavige served as Cruise's best man at the ceremony. McCarthy said she made a joke to him about having been "picked" and immediately sensed she had miscalculated. "He could have broke me, easily," she told Hill. She did not elaborate on what he said in return.

She pulled Holmes aside and asked if she was okay

The detail that carries the most weight comes after the ceremony. McCarthy says she found Holmes privately and asked, point blank, whether she was alright. She described the newly married Holmes as "a deer in headlights" with what she called "a shift" from the person she had seemed before the marriage.

That question at a wedding does not get asked unless something looks wrong enough to prompt it. McCarthy did not disclose what Holmes said. Per a related Yahoo report, McCarthy also said she believed Cruise genuinely thought the recruitment invitations were friendly and helpful, framing him less as predatory than as fully absorbed in a belief system he wanted to share.

McCarthy and Carrey split in 2010. Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in 2012, which she finalized in 11 days, a speed that drew wide comment at the time. The podcast is still running.
