The Backlash

A Raiders Fan Rated Taylor Swift a '3.' She Was Not Even at the Game.

She was in New York when a Raiders fan put her on a scorecard in Vegas ... and the sign spread anyway. The NFL built this problem for itself.

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders 30 to 27 on October 4 at Allegiant Stadium. That was not the story. Per Yahoo, a Raiders fan's handmade sign went viral: "SCORES 6S ON THE FIELD...3S OFF THE FIELD," rating Travis Kelce a 6 for his on-field play and his off-field life a 3, with a mustache drawn over a photo of his wife Taylor Swift on the same sign.

Swift was not there. She was in New York City supporting Dakota Johnson's Saturday Night Live hosting appearance, where she made a surprise on-stage cameo. Kelce was in Las Vegas playing the game. The sign's most direct target was absent when it was photographed and posted to social media, and it spread anyway.

That is the actual story.

The NFL Signed Up for This in 2023

The league began featuring Swift in its broadcast packages after she started dating Kelce in August 2023. Ratings climbed, driven in part by a wave of new viewers who had not previously watched NFL games. Camera operators found her suite. Celebrity arrival packages became standard. OutKick noted that the NFL's heavy promotion of celebrity influencers in broadcasts had become a running point of friction with the core fan base, who wanted more game coverage and less celebrity-following.

Swift and Kelce married on July 3, 2026, in a private ceremony in New York. By the start of the 2026 season, she had been a fixture in NFL coverage for three years. The league's celebrity experiment had moved past the dating-story phase into something more permanent.

What the Sign Is Really Saying

The Raiders fan's sign is not a celebrity critique. It is a brand critique of the NFL, expressed through the celebrity it chose to partner with. Brands that attach prominent cultural figures do not borrow only the upside. They absorb the backlash that follows the celebrity into any space where part of the audience did not invite them.

This dynamic is not unique to the NFL. The Sydney Sweeney Novig ad ran into the same problem: the brand used a celebrity's cultural heat and found itself standing in the middle of a conversation the celebrity had already been having with the public for years. The outrage was not manufactured by the brand. It was borrowed from the celebrity, along with the attention.

The sign went viral because a portion of the NFL audience has been waiting for a moment to say what it says, plainly, where others would see it. The opportunity came on October 4 in Las Vegas. Swift was in Manhattan. The sign would have circulated regardless of where she was, because the complaint is structural, not situational.

The NFL's celebrity strategy works. The overnight ratings confirm it, and the new audience it brought to the league is real. But there is a cost that does not appear in the viewership data, and it showed up instead on a handmade poster in the lower bowl of Allegiant Stadium on a Tuesday night.
