Justin Timberlake Plans a Tell-All Apple TV Docuseries on His Biggest Scandals
A four-part series reportedly set for December would revisit the 2004 Super Bowl halftime incident with Janet Jackson and his past with Britney Spears.
Variety reported on November 3, 2026 that Justin Timberlake is planning a four-part tell-all docuseries for Apple TV, with director Fisher Stevens attached, targeting a December premiere. Vice and Hot97 both covered the report the same morning. No official statement from Timberlake, Janet Jackson, or Apple had been issued by the time of publication.
According to both outlets, the series would cover the 2004 Super Bowl halftime incident with Jackson, the moment known widely as Nipplegate, and the arc of his past relationship with Britney Spears. Hot97 reported that Jackson is "said to provide her own perspective" on the incident within the series. Vice did not confirm that claim, citing only older material in which she described Timberlake as "a very good friend."
What Happened at the Super Bowl
During the February 1, 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show, Timberlake removed part of Jackson's costume on live television, exposing her briefly. CBS, which broadcast the game, faced an FCC investigation and a fine that was later overturned in federal court. The incident became the most rewound moment in TiVo's history to that point.
In the weeks that followed, the trajectory for the two performers diverged. CBS offered both a slot at the Grammy Awards, then three weeks away, on the condition of an on-air apology. Timberlake accepted, performed, and won two awards at the ceremony. Jackson did not appear. Viacom-owned radio stations and MTV cut her airplay. Her Damita Jo album, released that March, underperformed relative to her prior records. Timberlake released FutureSex/LoveSounds two years later and had his largest commercial success to that point.
The Apple TV Frame
Apple TV has built a prestige content library with Severance, The Morning Show, and Ted Lasso. For Timberlake, it is a rehabilitative context: a platform known for awards consideration, in which difficult events are examined rather than buried. That is a different brand choice from silence, and a different one from the 2021 Instagram apology he posted to both Spears and Jackson.
The docuseries follows his 2026 DWI conviction in Sag Harbor, New York and a July 2025 Lyme disease announcement that interrupted his "Forget Tomorrow" world tour. Fisher Stevens directed the 2009 Oscar-winning documentary The Cove and went on to produce Before the Flood with Leonardo DiCaprio.
I don't know how to apologize enough for whatever those ambitions were. Too many boots. Too many cats. I hope you can forgive me.
The Open Question
Whether Jackson actually participates is the central unresolved fact. Hot97 reported she is "said to provide her own perspective," without naming a source. Vice and Variety did not make that claim. The lack of a formal announcement from Apple or either artist leaves the structure of the series unconfirmed. If Jackson participates, the series becomes a different kind of document than if Timberlake narrates the events alone.
A December premiere would place the series in the same awards consideration window as Apple's other prestige releases. We will update this entry when an official announcement is made.
