Patrick Stewart Dies at 86 With One More Professor X Film Still to Come
The actor who played both Captain Picard and Professor X died October 28 after a brief journey with dementia. His final Marvel appearance as Professor X in Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18.
Patrick Stewart died October 28, 2026 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. His spokesperson confirmed the cause was Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. His family said in a statement: "We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace."
The death came with an unusual coda: his final film performance had not yet reached theaters. Stewart filmed a return as Charles Xavier, Professor X, for Avengers: Doomsday. That film opens December 18, 2026, six weeks from now. Ian McKellen, who played Magneto across the Fox X-Men franchise, also appears, completing the original pairing one final time.
Marvel Studios said he was "a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman." His family asked fans to donate to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer's Foundation of America Caregiver Resources in lieu of flowers.
The Brand Career Nobody Expected
Stewart was knighted in 2010, won two Olivier Awards (Antony and Cleopatra in 1979, Hamlet in 2008), and earned a Grammy for spoken word recording. By any measure his career sat at the serious end of the entertainment spectrum. He was also, throughout, willing to make ads.
His most distinctive campaign was for Strongbow cider, produced by Droga5. The central joke of the campaign was that Strongbow was so good it did not need a celebrity to sell it, and therefore having Patrick Stewart endorse it was almost absurd. Stewart played along. He made fun of the endorsement format while being inside it, which is the harder trick to pull off.
For Yorkshire Tea he took a different angle, one rooted in straight heritage. The Lucky Generals "Where Everything's Done Proper" campaign is built around the idea that Yorkshire, England, does things correctly. Stewart, Yorkshire-born, was the right face for that premise. The campaign used his gravitas to sell tea without irony and it worked.
His third distinctive brand moment was the 2024 Paramount+ Super Bowl ad, which brought him back as Captain Picard alongside Drew Barrymore, Jeff Probst, and Peppa Pig. Stewart shrugged off a coat to reveal 1920s football gear and threw a pass. Adweek, in a piece published after his death, noted the campaign leaned into the idea that "he never shied from starring in ads despite his Shakespearean credentials." The ad ran in front of the largest television audience in the United States.
Eight Films as Professor X
The X-Men franchise was Stewart's most sustained brand relationship. He played Charles Xavier in eight films across the Fox X-Men era, from the original X-Men in 2000 through the MCU crossover in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). The character became as recognizable a part of his public identity as Picard.
Avengers: Doomsday was filmed before his diagnosis became public. That December 18 release now carries a different weight: a crowd will watch him as Professor X one final time in a theater, months after he died. Posthumous film releases are not unusual in Hollywood, but the scale of this one is.
The Pattern
The brand campaigns Stewart said yes to shared a structure. Each one connected to something he actually was: a Yorkshire man for Yorkshire Tea, a sci-fi icon for Paramount, a self-aware knight who knew that "celebrity cider endorsement" was a slightly ridiculous concept for Strongbow. He did not take contracts that required him to be something other than himself.
That is rarer in celebrity advertising than it sounds. Many endorsement deals ask the celebrity to temporarily be a brand character. Stewart, in each of his major campaigns, played a version of himself that was also the brand's best version of themselves. Strongbow wanted something self-deprecating and wry. Yorkshire Tea wanted authority. Paramount wanted the captain back. He gave each of those things cleanly.
He is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, and his children Daniel Stewart and Sophie Alexandra Stewart. Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, 2026.
