Daisy Ridley Bets on Pregnancy Horror as Her Post-Rey Reinvention
Get Rid of It opens in 2027. Ridley plays Harper, a woman whose fetus may not be human. The producer's last two films were Whiplash and Nightcrawler.
Daisy Ridley played Rey Skywalker across three blockbusters and a cultural phenomenon that ran for a decade. Her next role is a woman whose drifter one-night stand may have left something inhuman growing inside her.
Ridley will play Harper in Get Rid of It, a road-trip horror feature announced November 4 by director Ry Russo-Young. Sosie Bacon plays Jessie, Harper's sister. Simon Rex plays Miller, the drifter at the center of the pregnancy. The script is by Gemma Holdway. Filming is set to begin at the start of 2027, per Yahoo Entertainment.
The premise is clean. Harper discovers she is pregnant after a single night with Miller. She and her sister drive cross-country. Somewhere on that road they realize what Harper is carrying may not be human.
Propulsive and playful, this project's strength is its compelling point of view and heart beneath the horror. I'm thrilled to bring it to life with such an extraordinary and gifted group of collaborators.
A Career Move That Looks Designed on Purpose
Ridley could have played it safe. She already has a Ti West horror-thriller with Johnny Depp called Ebenezer in the queue, and the route from Star Wars to prestige cinema is well-worn. Picking a second horror film before her first one lands is a signal.
Horror is where the best character work in Hollywood is happening right now. Mia Goth built a franchise in the X trilogy. Florence Pugh's Midsommar still gets studied. Pregnancy horror in particular carries a register that gets taken seriously: it is personal, monstrous, and unresolvable by heroism. Ridley is making choices that look like a career designed on purpose.
The Team Behind It
Russo-Young directed Before I Fall in 2017 and two episodes of Apple TV's Shrinking. She is not a standard genre director. David Lancaster is producing. His credits include Whiplash, which was nominated for Best Picture in 2015, and Nightcrawler, which is still taught in film schools. This is the third time Lancaster has backed a director who is working in a register that is adjacent to mainstream but not inside it.
Sosie Bacon is currently starring in Scarpetta, a crime series opposite Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis. Simon Rex won the Gotham Award for Red Rocket in 2021 and appeared in Blink Twice. This is a cast assembled for prestige, not a standard genre drop.
What Comes Next
No distributor has been named. Filming starts in early 2027. The question now is which festival the finished film is aimed at.
