Alanis Morissette Reveals She Is Pansexual on the Handsome Podcast
The 90s alt-rock icon disclosed her orientation casually on the November 3 episode, surprising even the LGBTQ+ comics hosting the show.
Alanis Morissette confirmed she is pansexual on the November 3 episode of the Handsome podcast, dropping the news so casually that the three LGBTQ+ comedians hosting the show had their jaws drop. The hosts then told her they wished they had led with that.
Fortune Feimster had asked whether the experiences that inspired some of Morissette's most famous songs, the betrayals and collapsed relationships, had ever made her want to be a lesbian. Morissette replied: "I'm pansexual, so, yeah."
I'm pansexual, so, yeah.
Tig Notaro, one of the other hosts, pushed back with a surprised "Wait, you're not really pansexual, are you?" Morissette confirmed it without hesitation: "I am." She then joked that she prefers to hold things back strategically: "I like to leave it for the epilogue."
Not the First Hint
This was not entirely without precedent. In 2008, Morissette told The Advocate that exploring one's sexuality is a "rite of passage." Around the same time she told Howard Stern she considered herself "pretty heterosexual" while acknowledging she had experimented with women.
In September 2026, on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy, she revealed something else that fits the pattern: she said she was the one who pitched the now-famous Carrie Bradshaw kiss in season three of Sex and the City in 2000. The scene aired twenty-six years ago. She described kissing Sarah Jessica Parker as "very pleasant."
The Catalog Reread
Morissette is 52 and currently on a 2026 world tour that includes a June run through the UK and Ireland and a July date at the Calgary Stampede. Jagged Little Pill, the 1995 album that made her name, is certified 33 times platinum in the United States. Its songs about rage and betrayal have been held up for decades as a specifically female response to male bad behavior.
The reveal on the Handsome podcast changes none of that anger, but it does reframe who could be on the receiving end of it. The songs were always about betrayal. The gender of the person doing the betraying was, it turns out, a detail she was saving for the epilogue.
The Handsome podcast is hosted by Notaro, Feimster, and Mae Martin, all three of whom are openly queer. The episode aired on November 3. Coverage from Vice and Us Weekly went wide on November 7.
