DraftKings Falls 27 Percent After Betting Its Future on Prediction Markets

Revenue grew 16% and prediction market volume rose fivefold since July. The stock still crashed 27% because DraftKings is spending $700 million this year on a product generating zero revenue in 2026.

DraftKings reported revenue of $1.33 billion for Q3 2026, up 16% from a year earlier, and said its prediction market platform had grown five times in volume since July. Its stock dropped 27% in extended trading anyway.

The reason is a voluntary spending decision that converted a profitable year into a heavily loss-making one. The company raised its 2026 prediction market investment to $650 million to $700 million, cutting its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance from $700 million to $900 million down to $175 million to $275 million. DraftKings is spending more on customer acquisition for a product that management described as generating "immaterial" revenue this year.

The quarter itself missed analyst estimates on the bottom line. The company reported a loss of 53 cents per share, against a consensus estimate of a 28-cent loss, and revenue of $1.33 billion against an expected $1.39 billion. Monthly unique payers grew 13% to 4.1 million, beating the 4 million estimate. Online casino revenue grew only 2.1%, while sports and predictions revenue rose 31.5% to $784 million.

What the Prediction Market Is Actually Doing

The prediction market platform, launched in December 2025 as a CFTC-regulated event-contracts product, now counts 1.6 million lifetime users. Its annualized trading volume hit $56.8 billion in October, up five times from July. DraftKings runs its own brokerage, exchange, and market-maker arm under a platform it calls DKeX, putting it in direct competition with Kalshi and Polymarket. The company's October annualized gross profit run-rate on predictions was $350 million.

CEO Jason Robins called Q3 "a pivotal moment for DraftKings" and said the Predictions offering is "now powering meaningful growth for our business." His case for the spending: the 2026 customer cohort is on pace to pay back in approximately 20 months, below the company's own two-year payback target. At that rate, the investment clears ahead of schedule rather than behind it.

The 2027 Problem

Investors focused on the 2027 guidance, which came in below expectations. DraftKings projected 2027 revenue of $7.35 billion to $7.75 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $800 million to $1 billion. The EBITDA midpoint of $900 million missed the Bloomberg analyst consensus of $1.12 billion. The company projects 2027 prediction market revenue of $650 million to $750 million, with a continued adjusted EBITDA investment of $250 million to $350 million.

Not everyone on Wall Street agrees on the opportunity. Flutter Entertainment, one of the largest global gambling operators, fell 8% to $76.61 on the same day. Penn Entertainment, which operates sports betting under the ESPN Bet brand, fell 4% to $16.73. Penn's Aaron LaBerge, who leads the company's interactive business, was direct about the split: "We're not getting sucked into the noise of prediction markets."

Two Theories About Where Sports Betting Is Going

This earnings report is a live test of competing strategies. DraftKings is betting that prediction markets are a category shift worth buying into at almost any cost: 1.6 million users, $56.8 billion in annualized volume, and a payback curve running ahead of its own targets. Penn is betting that established sports betting customers are not about to migrate to a CFTC-regulated contract exchange. One of them will be right.

DraftKings held approximately $1.1 billion in cash at the end of Q3, which management says is enough to fund the investment cycle. The company models a downside scenario in which sports event contracts end on July 31, 2028, citing an assumed Supreme Court ruling. If that ruling goes against prediction markets, the entire $700 million investment becomes a customer acquisition cost with no recurring product to show for it. Robins says he still believes DraftKings is "set up for an exceptional 2027."
