Cindy Crawford Stepped Out After Son Presley Gerber Died at 27
Six weeks after Presley Walker Gerber died at a Santa Monica rehabilitation facility and the family posted heartfelt tributes, Crawford and Rande Gerber appeared publicly in Malibu.
On November 4, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber were photographed leaving a supermarket in Malibu, their first confirmed public appearance since the family posted tributes to their son Presley six weeks after he died. Presley Walker Gerber died on September 20 at a rehabilitation facility near Santa Monica. He was 27.
The Santa Monica Police Department told reporters it is investigating the death as a suspected overdose, with no indication of foul play. Death was pronounced at approximately 9:35 a.m. on September 20, according to HELLO Magazine. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner deferred the official cause and manner of death, a step that typically requires several months.
The family said nothing publicly for four weeks. When they did speak, on October 18, the statement was posted across all three of their Instagram accounts. TV Insider reported Crawford wrote his full dates in the opening line: "Presley Walker Gerber, July 2, 1999, September 20, 2026."
We are beyond heartbroken to lose our beloved son and brother. We feel so blessed to have had Presley in our lives for 27 years. He is a sweet, beautiful soul who loved and is loved, now and forever. We are so proud of how he showed up in the world, with kindness and vulnerability. Til we meet again our sweet boy. We love you forever, Mom, Dad and Kaia.
Kaia Gerber posted a video of the two as children alongside a letter. "You know how much I loved being your sister," she wrote, as reported by ABC News. "It has always been, and will forever be, my favorite thing about myself." She continued: "I came into this world with a white-knuckle grip around you. I had more love for you than I knew what to do with. And now that it has nowhere obvious to go, I'm certain it's going to swallow me whole. You were my ultimate teacher while you were here, and now I'm left wondering what I could possibly be taught in your absence."
The Brand That Was Built to Last Generations
Presley Gerber was signed by IMG Models at 15 and walked runways for Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger. TV Insider noted he appeared with his mother in a 2018 Super Bowl Pepsi commercial. The ad was constructed around generational brand logic: Crawford's decades of advertising credibility extending forward to her children. The family name, in that framing, was itself a marketing asset.
Cindy Crawford has been one of advertising's most durable faces for more than three decades. The original Pepsi Super Bowl ad that made her a cultural fixture ran in 1992, when she stepped out of a red Ferrari in a white swimsuit and two boys watched in awe. The 2018 follow-up cast her son in what amounted to a sequel, and the camera lingered on the generational handoff.
That handoff was a commercial statement as much as a creative one. Brand strategists call the approach legacy extension: using an established name to authenticate the next one. It worked for Kaia Gerber, who built her own modeling and acting career and has a collaboration with Re/Done. Presley's trajectory was harder. In a 2023 podcast, he spoke publicly about his struggles with mental health. His modeling career was intermittent after the early momentum.
Grief Without a Playbook
Crawford built her public identity on being seen. That is the fundamental contract of a modeling career: show up, be photographed, let the image do the work. The 2026 outing captured by Hola was not a press event or a brand appearance. It was a supermarket.
Celebrity brands are built on controlled visibility: the magazine spread, the product launch, the red carpet appearance. Grief does not cooperate with that system. The family spent four weeks saying nothing, then posted statements that were raw rather than curated. Kaia's letter was not a brand message. Neither was Crawford's.
The official cause of Presley's death remains pending from the Medical Examiner. Kaia Gerber continues working. Crawford and Rande Gerber's November 4 Malibu appearance was their first documented public outing since the tributes. They stopped at a supermarket.
