Johnny Walker Came From Behind to Stop the UFC Vegas 124 Favorite in Round 3
Walker trailed on two scorecards going into Round 3 of UFC Vegas 124, then stopped Cortes-Acosta by TKO. Second straight finish since moving up from light heavyweight.
Johnny Walker was down on the scorecards at UFC Vegas 124 when he ended the fight. Waldo Cortes-Acosta had won two of three judges' frames through the first two rounds, pressing forward and landing the heavier shots. At 2:27 of the third, Walker caught him with a right hand and the referee stopped it.
F*** everybody who says I have no chin.
The result, confirmed by UFC.com's official results page, is a TKO via strikes. Walker improves to 23-10 overall and 9-7 in the UFC, per Sherdog. Cortes-Acosta, who entered at 17-4, has now lost three straight.
The Short Notice Booking That Paid Off
Yahoo Sports reported the fight was booked on short notice after Sean Brady pulled out of a planned main event against Gabriel Bonfim with an injury. Walker stepped in. Cortes-Acosta had been building toward a heavyweight title shot: he was the headliner, the man favored to win, and had led for most of the night.
Walker's move to heavyweight came after a difficult run at light heavyweight. His first fight at the new weight was a knockout win over Mick Parkin. This is his second in a row. Two finishes in two appearances at heavyweight is a different story from the one he was telling at 205.
What This Means for Both Fighters
Walker's name now sits in the UFC heavyweight rankings conversation after back-to-back finishes. The chin question he addressed in his post-fight statement was a real one: his light heavyweight career included multiple knockdowns and stoppages. Two heavyweight wins, both by finish, with the second coming after absorbing two rounds on the judges' cards, is a credible answer.
For Cortes-Acosta, three consecutive losses at the main event level is a harder position. He was ahead entering the final round and still did not get the win. His path back likely runs through a step down in opponent level before another main event opportunity.
