The Met Dropped Galliano Over Antisemitism. Now the Gala Is About Jeans.
Search interest in "met gala 2027" sat near zero for weeks and peaked at 100 on Google Trends the day after the announcement. The theme is T-shirts, puffer jackets, and everyday objects.
Fashion's costliest night dropped a designer over antisemitism and replaced his retrospective with an exhibit about T-shirts and jeans. The announcement landed November 5. By November 6, search interest in "met gala 2027" had peaked at 100 on Google Trends, up from a baseline of 2 to 4 for the previous month.
The new theme is "extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday." Curator Andrew Bolton and the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced it alongside Vogue on November 5, 2026. The gala is May 3, 2027; the exhibition opens to the public May 9 and runs through January 9, 2028. The exhibit will cover ten categories of everyday clothing, including T-shirts, jeans, raincoats, hoodies, sweatshirts, and puffer jackets.
The Designer Who Was Dropped
John Galliano, who was convicted of antisemitism in Paris in 2011 and fined approximately $8,400, had a retrospective titled "John Galliano: Horizons" announced for the 2027 Costume Institute cycle. By August 2026, the Met dropped it after public backlash. Galliano himself argued against using an exhibition as a means of rehabilitation.
Meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition.
The statement is unusual: the person the exhibit was meant to honor argued the retrospective should not exist. The public objections and the designer's own stated position aligned on the same conclusion.
What "Extraordinary" Signals for Fashion Brands
"The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears," Bolton said. That is an apt description of the marketing situation for every fashion house planning their celebrity dressing for May 2027. The Met Gala is fashion's most valuable celebrity-marketing event: the red carpet is an earned-media platform where brands spend millions dressing celebrities in exchange for coverage worth many times more. The 2027 theme shifts the positioning play. Haute couture that simply demonstrates extravagance is off-theme. Elevated basics, denim, and sportswear are on it.
Met Director Max Hollein described the exhibit's purpose: "By bringing together works that begin with the clothes, objects, and materials of daily life, the show aims to explore how designers rework familiar garments, everyday objects, and commonplace materials." That curatorial logic translates directly into red carpet choices. Which house can most convincingly argue that its $5,000 hoodie or its $3,000 pair of jeans belongs in the same conversation as the exhibit?
What Comes Next
Celebrity hosts and the dress code have not been announced. These are typically revealed a few months before the gala. The exhibition itself opens to the general public on May 9, 2027, and runs through January 9, 2028.
Fashion media's first reaction was skeptical. Time Out New York headlined its coverage as "boring AF." That response is itself part of the story: the Met is staging fashion's most glamorous night around the least glamorous clothing. Bolton has used deconstruction and workwear as a frame before. The question for 2027 is whether "extraordinary" can make a T-shirt feel as charged as a Chanel gown, or whether the theme is an exercise in managing a brand crisis through contrast.
