KUWTK Cut Kanye's 30-Minute Rant at the Kardashians, Producer Reveals

The cameras caught Kanye West demanding to know why the family had not voted for him at Caitlyn Jenner's birthday party. The show aired Kim crying instead. A new biography is opening the vault.

The KUWTK cameras were rolling at Caitlyn Jenner's birthday on October 28, 2020. What they captured: Kanye West arriving and spending the next 30 minutes demanding to know why the Kardashian-Jenner family had not voted for his presidential campaign. What Season 20 viewers saw instead: Kim Kardashian crying to her sisters, saying she feels "like a f--king failure."

That gap is now documented. Former KUWTK exec producer Farnaz Farjam disclosed the cut scene in an excerpt from Jonathan Van Meter's forthcoming biography Citizen Kim (Penguin, October 27, 2026), shared with The Cut and picked up by Entertainment Weekly.

Farjam's account in the book: "He just started ripping into Kris and the family and questioning them about not voting for him. He just made it all about himself. That whole 30-minute battle was very telling, but we had to edit it out."

The birthday that became a campaign rally

Van Meter's account fills in what the show left blank. Kanye announced his presidential run in July 2020 via Twitter, news Kim learned through the media rather than from him directly. He had already retreated to his Wyoming ranch in February, leaving Kim and their four children. By October, the marriage was visibly fraying. The birthday gathering at Caitlyn's house was partly an attempt to repair family relations. Kanye's arrival turned it into a half-hour grievance session about his campaign.

Kim filed for divorce in February 2021. The KUWTK episode that aired from the October 2020 shoot centered on Kim breaking down to Kourtney, Kendall, and Kylie. "It's a third f--king marriage," she said. That scene ran. Kanye confronting the entire family in the same house, on camera, in the same session, did not.

The edit that shaped how America understood the divorce

KUWTK ran for 20 seasons on the premise of showing real life. But a produced show and a live broadcast are different things, and what gets cut is a decision. The Kim breakdown scene gave viewers a sympathetic protagonist in a failing marriage. The Kanye confrontation scene would have given them something rawer: a man who arrived at his mother-in-law's birthday and made the afternoon about himself.

The producers chose the Kim frame. That choice built the public narrative of the divorce: Kim as the one trying to hold things together, Kanye as the one who checked out. The cut scene does not contradict that reading, but it adds a layer the show deliberately withheld.

No statement from Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Kris Jenner, or Caitlyn Jenner accompanied the initial reporting.

Citizen Kim publishes October 27. At that point, the full account of what else was in the room becomes part of the permanent record.
